Getting to Marco

• Southwest Florida International AirportRSW

  49 mi · about 70 min by road

  The airport almost everyone actually uses. Fort Myers is about fifty road miles north of the Jolley Bridge and the run down I-75 to the Collier Boulevard exit takes a little over an hour in ordinary traffic, longer on a Saturday in February when half of the Midwest lands at once. Rental counters are in a consolidated garage across from the terminal, and the queue there is the part of the journey people underestimate. Book the car before you fly in high season rather than after you land.

  20 mi · about 35 min by road

  Twenty road miles north and by far the closest runway with any scheduled activity, though the service pattern is charter, seasonal and limited rather than a network of airline connections. Worth checking if you are flying private or on a charter package; not worth planning a holiday around. The drive down Collier Boulevard from Naples to the bridge is the same road everyone else uses and slows badly through the season.

  The island's own strip, a few miles northeast of the bridge on the mainland side of the Marco River. It is general aviation: private aircraft, charters, flight schools and the occasional air ambulance, with no scheduled airline service to build a trip around. If someone tells you they are flying into Marco Island, this is what they mean, and it is a very different arrival from RSW.

  110 mi · about 140 min by road

  The other side of the peninsula, and a genuine option when the fare gap is wide. You cross the state on Alligator Alley or on the Tamiami Trail, which is slower, prettier and takes you past the Everglades on the way in. Budget well over two hours and do not attempt it for the first time after dark: the Trail is two lanes with a canal on one side and very little lighting.

• Judge S.S. Jolley Bridge (CR-951)

  The front door. Collier Boulevard crosses Big Marco Pass on a pair of spans — the original 1969 bridge, which opened as a 40-cent toll crossing, and a parallel span that opened to traffic in October 2011 and took the road to four lanes. There is no toll now. This is the crossing every delivery truck, every tradesman and almost every visitor uses, so the northbound approach backs up on winter afternoons and after any large event on the island.

• Goodland Bridge (SR-92 / San Marco Road)

  The back door, and the more interesting one. San Marco Road runs east off the island through Goodland and crosses to the mainland to rejoin the Tamiami Trail near Collier-Seminole State Park. It is the shorter way to Everglades City, Chokoloskee and the eastern Ten Thousand Islands, and the way to Goodland's boat ramps and fish houses. Two lanes, no shoulder to speak of, and slower than the map implies.

• Tamiami Trail (US-41)

  The old road across the bottom of the state, and the spine every backcountry day trip hangs off. East of the SR-92 junction it runs through Collier-Seminole State Park, past the Fakahatchee Strand turnings and on to the SR-29 spur down to Everglades City and Chokoloskee, roughly 35 to 40 miles from the Jolley Bridge depending on where you are going. Panthers and bears cross it. Take the posted wildlife limits seriously at dusk.
